The Xbox DVD Remote Control is a remote that can be used to control DVDs played on the Xbox. The controller was released around the same time the Controller S was released. The remote came as part of a DVD Playback Kit along with an IR sensor that, when plugged into an Xbox controller port, enabled DVD playback (if the dongle was not present, an error message would be displayed).
As the remote was essentially a modified version of the remotes used by contemporary RCA DVD players (along with ones released under the GE and ProScan names), the IR codes are the same as an RCA DVD player remote; thus, not only will RCA DVD player remotes of the time control the Xbox, the Xbox remote can be used on these DVD players as well. (The RCA codes can also be used by universal remotes to control the Xbox.) Thomson, the French company that owned the rights to the RCA name at the time, also supplied optical drives for the Xbox console.
In parts of Europe, the remote was bundled with a Limited-Edition Box bundled with a Robbie Williams DVD.
Third-party remotes[]
Some companies produced their own version of the remote.
