Spelunky is a 2D rouge-like platformer game created by indie developer Derek Yu and released in 2008 as freeware for Microsoft Windows. It was remade and republished by Xbox Game Studios for the Xbox 360 on July 4, 2012. Being an indie-developed title, it was made available via Xbox Live Arcade, initially making it console exclusive to Xbox 360, until the same version was ported onto PlayStation 3 in 2013 and PlayStation 4 in 2014. Spelunky was made backwards compatable for Xbox One in December 2015. On Xbox One, it was free with Gold from August 1 to August 15, 2016, and free for Xbox Game Pass subscribers since launch on June 1, 2017, not departing until August 1, 2019.
Gameplay[]
The aim of the game is to explore caves as a nameless spelunker known by the sobriquet Spelunky Guy. The game is a 2D roguelite platformer game characterized by levels that are randomly generated. Spelunky Guy can defeat enemies by jumping on them, or with his trusty whip that works in close range. There are also various items in the game such as a shotgun, teleporter, machete, jetpack, plasma cannon, and much more, normally obtained from shops. Gold is found everywhere, and the player is able to purchase items from shops found in each level - or steal them! Pulling off successful heists takes a lot of practice, since shopkeepers are among the most dangerous foes in the game once provoked.
The game is started on Mines 1-1 with a limited number of bombs and ropes. The game ends on Temple 4-4. You cannot die once, or else you must start over. Levels are generated with increasing difficulty, so the player can only progress to different areas with skill and reflexes. Since levels are generated randomly, you cannot muscle memorize the game like in other platformers. This makes the game very challenging (for most people).
Levels are not completed by simply progressing through a level. The spelunker must find the exit door and not die once before finding it. Each area has four levels - all randomly generated. The Mines is the beginning area of the game, where an inexperienced player is already met with challenges. After the Mines, the succeeding areas are Jungle, Ice Caves, and Temple. Death can only be avoided with experience and reflexes, as there is no muscle memory in this game. After completing four levels, the environment changes, and the difficulty increases. This means that you must complete 16 dangerous ever-changing levels of increasing difficulty without dying to complete the game. On Xbox Live, only 2.40% of players have completed the game, which is due to the game's difficulty.
Variables[]
The many dangers in this game are never in the same place, and are responsible for causing death in the first place. Possible dangers are updated when you enter a new area. Each area has its own unique dangers, usually more formidable than the last. Dangers unique to certain areas include specific enemies and new hazardous traps.
Throughout levels, the player can meet shopkeepers where they can buy items using the gold they've collected in their game. Experienced players are able to steal from the shopkeeper, but must avoid getting killed by his shotgun. Provoking a shopkeeper in any way, such as by harming or stealing from them, will add shopkeepers guarding the exit door of each level. The game's logic will decide when or if you will be forgiven, depending on your crime. Sometimes, if something bad happens to them or their shop, shopkeepers will blame the player even if they are not at fault.
Damsels can be rescued and reward the spelunker with a kiss at the end of the level. This takes extra effort but gives the spelunker one extra health point. Bloodstained altars worshipping the evil deity Kali can be found randomly throughout the game, where the player is able to place stunned or dead bodies to increase the player's favor of Kali. Stunned bodies with more blood is preferred, and certain enemy types give more favor points than others. Damsels, Hired Hands, and Spelunkers are Kali's favorite sacrifices. Angering Kali by destroying altars will decrease the player's favor. Under certain conditions, Kali will punish the player.

Exploring the game and finding everything to attain 100% journal completion takes a really long time. There is much to discover in this game through natural gameplay, and there are also secret levels.
Hell[]
"To Hell and Back" is an achievement unlocked when you "Complete the game the hard way". To do this, you must finish Temple and unlock the secret final area of the game, Hell. There are a number of specific things you must do throughout your playthrough to be able to unlock Hell and finish the game the hard way. Hell is also the hardest part of the game unlocked at the very end if you meet very specific requirements, so it is incredibly difficult to get good enough to beat Hell. At the very end of Hell, the player has to defeat a boss known as King Yama, the ruler of Hell. Only a minority of 0.75% of players have succeeded in completing Hell.
