Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth is an Xbox 360 fighting game utilizing the Kinect, developed and published by Ubisoft. The story is based on the Secret Invasion storyline of Marvel Comics, featuring the shape-shifting alien race known as the Skrulls as the main antagonists, lead by Queen Veranke and Super Skrull. The game received mixed/average reviews.
Plot[]
A shape-shifting alien race known as the Skrulls plan to invade Earth in what the comic books titularly refer to as the "Secret Invasion". The Skrulls become doppelgangers of the heroes, even mimicking their powers, hence the name "Secret Invasion". Earth's real heroes must come together to prevent the Skrulls from invading Earth. The game takes place in New York City of Earth-TRN219.
Reception[]
The game received mixed or average reviews. Official Xbox Magazine gave an average review, saying that "Though the game mostly works as advertised, occassional missed moves and finicky menus disappoint. So do the bare-bones campaign and limited array of fighting venues. But with bonus challenge stages, split-screen and online multiplayer, and local co-op beatdowns, this lively Kinect romp packs unexpected (but appreciated) staying power." Electronic Gaming Monthly gave a similar review, saying that "As usual, the gimmicks quickly become evident and tiresome, especially for folks familiar with the comic arc this game's story is based off of. However, there is some surprising polish here and you might have more fun with it than you'd expect as it is one of the few Kinect games where the controls actually work." In contrast to other Kinect games, many have noted that its production is above average.[1]
British magazine Metro acknowledged the relative cutting edge of the game when compared with other Kinect titles, but gave it a 4/10 for having simplistic combat regardless, calling it "at least mindless fun while it lasts", and stating that the game suffers from minor control issues.[2] Hardcore Gamer elaborately specified that the simplistic combat "will disappoint hardcore fighting fans and hurt replay value with casual ones."[3] Metacritic gave it an aggregated score of 62 based on 11 critic reviews, denoting "mixed or average reviews".[4]
Fate[]
The game has been delisted from the Marketplace. Online services were closed on November 11, 2017, and the downloadable-content is now impossible to download, making the Trialist Achievement discontinued unless the DLC was downloaded when it was still up. Used physical copies of the game can still be found, but as the game is not well-known and discontinued like most other Xbox 360 games, new copies are hard to find.
