Faceplates

Various Xbox One controller faceplates.

Faceplate is the name given to the front casing of a video game controller or console.

Definition[]

A faceplate is a piece of protection used to cover up internal parts of machinery or technology. Common items that use faceplates are light switches, electrical outlets and even video game controllers.

Xbox 360[]

The faceplate is a plastic cover attached to the front of the original Xbox 360 console. Original models had the ability to swap and personalise the front of the console by replacing the standard faceplate with a custom one. Custom faceplates were sold online and in some retail stores.

Xbox 360 faceplates were popular for a while but eventually the fad died down. In an interview with Official Xbox Magazine, Xbox console marketing at the time Albert Penello said "We don't ever create an accessory with the intent of having it fail", "The idea wasn't bad... people used to put faceplates on their mobile phones. Rewind five years, faceplates were what everybody wanted to do." Many people used to spend lots of time making custom faceplates for their consoles and for other people but in retail stores the covers did not sell very well. "It turned out nobody bought it. We killed that one pretty quickly,".

The Xbox 360 faceplates did not last very long and it was clear that Microsoft had no plans to continue making the accessory. After the release of the Xbox 360 S, Microsoft no longer made it possible to remove the front cover of the console ending the use of faceplates. However some people continued to make faceplates for Xbox 360 consoles including the Xbox 360 E.

How to swap[]

1. Unplug the power lead and any other cables connected to the back of your console.

2. Position your console horizontally, as you would position a DVD player.

3. While holding the console firmly, push the faceplate away from the console with your thumbs.

4. Align the tabs on the other faceplate with the slots on the console.

5. Press the faceplate firmly until it clicks into place.
